Shakti of Knowledge: The Inspiring Story of Sudha Murty
Navratri is a festival that celebrates the forms of Shakti. Shakti means strength, courage, wisdom, compassion and determination. There are women who show the power of knowledge. One of them is Sudha Murty. Her life has been shaped by education by simplicity by learning and by service.
Her story shows how knowledge can become a source of strength. It also shows how education can create opportunities. These opportunities are not for one person but, for many many others.
A Childhood Filled with Learning
Sudha Murty was born in 1950 in Shiggaon, Karnataka. From an age education became a big part of her life. She became very interested in mathematics and science. Chose to study engineering when very few women were going into that area.
She got her bachelor degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Then got a master degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Her time in school was impressive especially because there were not chances for women, in engineering back then.
Breaking Barriers Through Knowledge
After completing her studies Sudha Murty went into the working world. Became one of the first women engineers to work at TELCO, which is now called Tata Motors.
Her start, at the company happened because she saw that the hiring process did not seem to accept women engineers. She wrote a letter directly to J. R. D. Tata asking about the policy. She was then called in for an interview. Became the first woman engineer to be hired by TELCO.
This moment was a part of her life—not just because she got a job but because she used her understanding and self-belief to challenge a wall that was stopping women from getting opportunities.
From Engineer to Teacher and Author
Sudha Murtys connection with knowledge went beyond her job.
She later became a teacher. She kept sharing what she had learned with others. Over the years she also became a writer writing books for children and adults.
Through her stories she showed readers values such, as kindness, honesty, humility, courage and compassion.
Her writing was another way of sharing knowledge—making important life lessons easy to understand through stories.
Knowledge That Became Service
Sudha Murty has also been closely associated with philanthropic work through the Infosys Foundation.
Her work has supported initiatives related to education, healthcare, rural development, social welfare, and other community needs.
For her, knowledge was not only something to acquire. It was something that could be used to improve lives.
This belief became an important part of her journey: education gives us knowledge, but using that knowledge for the betterment of others gives it greater meaning.
The Shakti of Knowledge
The story of Sudha Murty reminds us that Shakti does not always appear as something powerful. Sometimes Shakti is found in the strength of learning. It is the courage to ask questions. It is the confidence to challenge limitations.
It is the willingness to keep learning. It is the humility to share what we know with others. Sudha Murtys journey—from a student about education, to an engineer, teacher, author and philanthropist—shows how knowledge can shape a life.
During Navratri, as we celebrate the different forms of Shakti, her story reminds us of one powerful truth: Knowledge is a form of strength—and when knowledge is shared, its power multiplies.
Sudha Murty's life is a beautiful example of the Shakti of Knowledge.
