Shakti of Leadership: The Inspiring Story of Tessy Thomas

Navratri is a festival that honours the forms of Shakti. Shakti means courage. It also means strength. It includes knowledge. It includes determination. It also includes leadership. There are women who show the power of leadership. One of them is Tessy Thomas. She is a scientist. Her journey in defence research helped women take a place. This place is, in a specialized field.

A Passion for Science

Tessy Thomas grew up in Kerala. She had an interest in mathematics and science from a young age. She went on to study engineering. Later she joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation, known as DRDO. This marked the start of her career in missile technology.
Over the years she worked in important areas. These included guidance systems, control mechanisms, inertial navigation, trajectory simulation and mission design. She was deeply involved in the Agni programme, from its development stages. Her work helped shape the programme into what it became.

Leading the Agni Programme

Tessy Thomas became the woman scientist in India to lead a missile project. She held the position of Project Director for Agni-IV. Was also deeply involved in the development of the Agni-V programme.
Leading these projects required her to work with big teams of scientists and engineers. She had to handle technical problems and take full responsibility for major missions. In 2012 she led the team that carried out the flight test of Agni-IV.
Her leadership was not about doing everything by herself. It was, about combining knowledge, technology, teamwork and strong determination to reach a shared goal.

Learning from Challenges

Tessy Thomas has shared her thoughts on the difficulties faced while developing the Agni-IV system. When she took over the project the team had to rework the missile system from the ground up and tackle technical problems.
This experience taught her a lesson in leadership. Challenges and failures don’t mean the end. Instead they can be stepping stones, to learning, growth and progress. Each setback became a chance to get better and push forward.

A Leader Who Inspired Others

We have watched Tessy Thomass journey. It became a shining example for women who are interested in science and technology.
Through Tessy Thomass contribution, to India’s missile programme Tessy Thomas demonstrated that women could take roles in highly technical and demanding areas of national research. Tessy Thomass achievements were recognized with honours, including the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award in 2012.

The Shakti of Leadership

Tessy Thomass story shows that leadership is not about having a role. It is, about being responsible working with others dealing with difficulties and keeping moving toward a common objective.
From a woman who loves science to becoming a leader in India’s missile programme her journey shows how knowledge, responsibility, teamwork and determination can shape a path. Her journey, driven by curiosity and hard work reminds us that knowledge, responsibility, teamwork and determination are the forces, behind success.

During Navratri, her story represents the Shakti of Leadership—the strength to take responsibility, the courage to face challenges, and the ability to inspire others through action. Her journey reminds us that true leadership is not just about leading from the front; it is about helping a team move forward together.
